Joint efforts can ensure an environment in which journalism fulfills its key role to inform freely, protect democracy, and serve the public, Simona Veleva, Chair of the Council for Electronic Media (CEM), said here on Tuesday. She addressed the opening of a conference titled "The European Media Freedom Act - a Framework for Independence and Pluralism in the European Union".

"The European Media Freedom Act puts at the center of attention the values that lie at the foundation of every free society - independent, pluralistic, and professional journalism carried out by free and independent media that are transparently and freely financed and that uphold pluralism. The Act introduces clear guarantees against political interference, transparent rules on media ownership, and mechanisms to protect editorial autonomy," Veleva explained. She added that "all these are principles that we at CEM, as the national media regulator, affirm and defend every day."
