Regional cooperation between the Black Sea countries is key to achieving sustainable management and protection of the Black Sea Region, Environment and Water Minister Manol Genov said during the Black Sea 2030: Partnership for a Sustainable Future International Forum in Burgas on Friday.

“Only through close coordination and partnership between institutions, local authorities, businesses, the non-governmental sector, academic communities, and citizens can sustainability in the management and protection of the Black Sea Region be achieved,” Genov stressed. He underscored that the Black Sea is of strategic importance not only for Bulgaria but also for the European Union, adding that the country remains committed to advancing European goals in marine and ocean protection policies.

Genov said that sustainable development requires realistic goals and approaches, tailored to regional specificities, which balance economic realities with environmental requirements. He pointed to the vulnerability of the Black Sea as an internal one, noting the consequences of the recent floods along the Bulgarian coast and the need for consistent implementation of preventive measures in risk areas.

"Environmental challenges do not recognize borders and require joint action from the entire Black Sea Region," Genov further said, recalling that Bulgaria assumed the chairmanship of the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation on July 1, 2025, with one of the priorities being environmental protection and sustainable resource management. There is a need for consistent work to address pollution, biodiversity loss and promote sustainable solutions in fisheries and aquaculture, the Minister also stressed.

The Black Sea 2030: Partnership for a Sustainable Future International Forum is organized by Burgas Municipality, in partnership with the ProspectiM Association and with the support of the scientific community, maritime business and the non-governmental sector. It focused on the green transition, the protection of the marine and coastal environment, digitalization and the promotion of innovations in the blue economy. The goal of the forum is to create a platform for visionary ideas and the exchange of good practices.
