Professor Nikolay Gabrovski Awarded Doctor of the Year

Professor Nikolay Gabrovski received the 2025 Doctor of the Year Award at a ceremony held at the National History Museum on Monday. The prestigious award was presented by Vice President Iliana Iotova.

A corresponding member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Gabrovski is regarded as one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Bulgarian medicine. He currently heads the Neurosurgery Clinic at the Pirogov Emergency Hospital and is its Deputy Director, the Bulgarian Medical Association said.

Gabrovski has been the Chairman of the Bulgarian Society of Neurosurgery since 2018, with his term concluding in October 2025. In 2022, he was elected the first chair of the Emerging Technologies and Innovations at the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) Task Force. He was recently appointed a member of the EANS Executive Committee and now serves as the organization’s Treasurer.

Under his leadership, Sofia hosted the 24th European Congress of Neurosurgery in 2024. This was the first time the event was held in Bulgaria. The congress brought together nearly 2,000 specialists from 89 countries.

Gabrovski’s scientific work focuses on spinal and robotic neurosurgery, as well as minimally invasive techniques. Under his guidance, the Neurosurgery Clinic at Pirogov has become a reference centre for robotic spinal surgery and a training hub for neurosurgeons across Europe.

Since September 2024, Gabrovski has also served as Chairman of the Brain Health Council Foundation, through which he is actively engaged in public advocacy for improving the quality of life of people living with brain disorders.

“There is no technology that can replace compassion and human love,” Vice President Iliana Iotova said in her address to the medical professionals during the ceremony. “You cannot be a good doctor unless you are a good person, a truth you prove every day through your professionalism and your dedication to your patients,” she added.
