The Health Ministry expressed its gratitude Saturday to all those who support the cause of organ donation – to the medical teams who work with dedication every day, and to the families who find the strength to give the gift of life in their most difficult moments, the Ministry wrote on its official Facebook page on the occasion of the European Day for Organ Donation and Transplantation. This year’s theme is: "Organ donation, more life. United in purpose. Stronger together."
Across the country, various events have been planned to mark the European Day for Organ Donation and Transplantation. On Sunday, during the Sofia Marathon, a special start will be given for transplant recipients, donor relatives, and supporters of the cause. On Monday, the traditional "Tree of Life" ceremony will take place at the Military Medical Academy, where the names of donors who, in 2025, gave severely ill patients a chance at life will be symbolically added, the Ministry said.
On 17 October, 13 roses will be planted in the "Donors' Garden" behind the National Palace of Culture as a sign of gratitude to organ donors. The garden is a symbol of the appreciation and respect shown by transplant recipients to donors and their families.
On Saturday, more than 40 buildings in over 27 municipalities will be symbolically illuminated in green.
According to the Medical Supervision Executive Agency’s website, as of October 3, 875 people in Bulgaria are in need of a transplant. Since the beginning of the year, 20 transplants have been carried out, following nine donor situations.
