An earthquake which shook the Turkish city of Istanbul on Thursday afternoon was felt in the Bulgarian Black Sea city of Burgas, approximately 200 km (airline distance) to the northwest.
People in Burgas reported having felt a slight shake in residential buildings. The quake was felt in many parts of the Bulgarian city.
The magnitude of the jolt was variously reported at 5 points on the Richter scale (according to Turkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency, AFAD) and 5.1 points (according to Bulgaria’s National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography).
It struck at a depth of 6.7 km under the Sea of Marmara near the Turkish municipality of Marmara Ereglisi in Tekirdag Province. No one was reported injured in the quake and no destruction of property was observed. The jolt was felt particularly strongly in the Asian part of Istanbul. It lasted just a few seconds but caused great panic, sending many people out into the streets.
