Bulgarian President Rumen Radev on Friday greeted the residents of Chirpan (60 km east of Plovdiv in Southern Bulgaria) ahead of Bulgaria’s Unification Day and in connection with the town holiday.
Visiting the town, the President said in a speech: “Today, I am with you, the citizens of Chirpan, to thank you for keeping alive the memory of those proud Bulgarians who predetermined Bulgaria’s development for generations to come.”
He said Chirpan was one of those places in 1885 which provided a setting for a pivotal historic event thanks to their uncompromising and brave people. “It has been 140 years since that September day when the detachment of the courageous volunteer soldiers of Chirpan set out to Plovdiv to provide armed support for the national cause,” Radev said.
He congratulated the municipal leadership on the important steps it has taken to modernize the 12,000-population town and upgrade its infrastructure and urban environment.
