site.btaBorder Police Seize Record Amount of Marijuana at Kapitan Andreevo

Bulgarian border police officers have seized a record amount of illegally transported marijuana worth over BGN 3.1 million at the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint on the border with Turkiye, Haskovo District Prosecutor Ivan Stoyanov said on Thursday.

The 194 kg seizure was made during a customs inspection of a Serbian-registered truck leaving Bulgaria for Turkiye. The truck had entered from Romania and had been under three-day surveillance by the Bulgarian authorities. The operation was conducted by the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and the Customs Agency.

The driver, a Serbian citizen, was detained for 72 hours and has already admitted to the act. He could face 10 to 15 years in prison and a fine of BGN 100,000 to 200,000 if convicted, Stoyanov said.
