The institutions are mobilized and working together to deal with the freight train derailment near the village of Pyasachevo in Haskovo Region, Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Grozdan Karadjov said on Facebook. There are no casualties and no immediate risk to the population, he said.
Karadjov was referring to an accident in which 11 diesel tank wagons from a freight train operated by a private carrier derailed near Pyasachevo early on Friday.
In his words, the response from the fire safety service, the Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ), the National Railway Infrastructure Company (NRIC), the Mini Maritsa Iztok state-owned coal mining company, the carrier, the Regional Governor and the local authorities was very swift and adequate.
Local authorities have provided additional water sources; BDZ has supplied locomotives to remove the undamaged wagons; NRIC emergency teams have been assisting firefighters with personnel, equipment and materials; and Mini Maritsa Iztok has provided heavy machinery to secure the perimeter, Karadjov said.
"All of us will remain on site until the crisis is resolved," he added.
Slightly elevated levels of benzene concentration in the air were reported after measurements in the area of the train accident, Tonka Atanasova, acting Director of the Haskovo Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water, told BTA. She specified that the higher levels were due to the burning of diesel fuel.
