About 90% of wildfires in Bulgaria are caused by human error and negligence, said the Interior Ministry Secretary General, Chief Commissioner Miroslav Rashkov. On Monday, he arrived at the site of a wildfire near the village of Radovets, Topolovgrad Region (Southern Bulgaria), adjacent to the Municipality of Svilengrad.
“The operational situation is very difficult,” Rashkov said, noting that the warm weather and local winds are complicating firefighting efforts. Around 200 to 300 fires occur daily across the country, he added, urging the public to take precautions and avoid actions that may start fires.
Regarding firefighting equipment, Rashkov noted that procedures have been initiated for the purchase of new gear.
He also said that a man has been detained and charged with terrorism in connection with the fire in Veliko Tarnovo. Arrests have also been made for arson in Sliven and Levka (Southeastern Bulgaria), with further actions by the prosecution underway.
Rashkov expressed gratitude for the teamwork among all services involved in fire suppression, including the Fire Safety and Civil Protection Directorate, National Police, Gendarmerie, Border Police, regional directorates, and the Ministry of Defence.
