A potential failure on Bulgaria’s part to adopt the euro on January 1, 2026, has been identified by one of the security services as a serious risk to Bulgaria’s national security, not only regarding the economy and finances, but in general. The information came after a closed-door meeting from Atanas Atanassov, chairman of the parliamentary Committee for Control of the Security Services, the Application and use of the Special Intelligence Means and the Data Access under the Electronic Communications Act.

The main point of Thursday’s meeting was to hear the heads of the State Agency for National Security (SANS), the State Intelligence Agency, and the Military Intelligence Service regarding the risks of thwarting Bulgaria’s accession to the eurozone on January 1, 2026, the special operations being carried out - including disinformation - by foreign special services to undermine Bulgaria’s main foreign policy priority, and the actions taken to counter these operations.

“We have been formally accepted, but ultimately, the actual entry into the eurozone will take place after January 1, which means that between now and January 1, these risks exist and they are multi-faceted,” Atanassov said.

According to him, disinformation on the euro in Bulgaria comes mainly from Russia, and this is no surprise.

“The goal of Russian foreign policy and the Russian services is not only the possible collapse of the euro, but also, if possible, ultimately, the collapse of the European Union,” Atanassov added.
