Twenty-five elderly are taken out of a nursing home in Burgas (on the Black Sea), Labour and Social Policy Minister Borislav Gutsanov told a news briefing here on Wednesday. The home was found to be operating without a license during a check by the Social Services Quality Agency on Tuesday, he specified.

"Unfortunately, their health condition is truly bad. It is not like in the village of Yagoda and in Varna, but the situation is quite bad," he noted. He was referring to two cases of unlicensed nursing homes uncovered across Bulgaria in the past months as part of a large-scale investigation into illegal facilities providing care for the elderly.

The checks continue; not a single unlicensed nursing home will remain operational, the Minister stated.

During the news briefing with Minister Gutsanov, Justice Minister Georgi Georgiev said that the work of unlicensed nursing homes for elderly people and other types of such facilities will be criminalized.
