site.btaUPDATED Vazrazhdane, Civic Initiative Stage Anti-Euro Protests As Bulgaria Clears Last Hurdle to Euro Accession
Shouting “No to the euro!” and “Resign!” protesters gathered in the space between the National Assembly and the Presidency in defence of the Bulgarian lev after Bulgaria was endorsed by the Eurpean Parliamnt and the Council of the European Union to join the euro as of January 1 2026. The protest was organized by the Vazrazhdane party.
Those present at the protest waved the Bulgarian flag and flags of Vazrazhdane. A large poster depicting a 100 euro note was torn by the protesters as a sign of defiance.
Earlier in the day, the Buditeli Civic Initiative Tuesday organized a protest against the adoption of the euro in front of the European Parliament's Sofia office and the European Commission Representation in Bulgaria. They said they would continue to protest and seek support from other civic initiatives and party representatives.
The protesters held flags and posters reading, "The euro is the final nail in the coffin of Bulgaria".
Heavy police presence in the area ensured the protesters could not reach the building of the European Parliament's office in Sofia.
