The parliamentary group Velichie has issued a declaration Thursday accusing the Bulgarian government of failing to address serious environmental problems, including widespread illegal landfills. The declaration described the situation as "an environmental catastrophe". As she read out the declaration in plenary, MP Krasimira Ninova - Katincharova stated that such sites may cover up to one-tenth of the country’s territory, based on data collected by the party since January.

In March, Velichie prepared a no-confidence vote, citing what it sees as the government’s lack of capacity to deal with environmental challenges.

The party also pointed to ongoing EU infringement procedures, including one related to drinking water. "You pretend not to hear – the authorities and the government as well," Katincharova said during the parliamentary statement.
