The lowest number of road accident fatalities since 2005, when official statistics began, was recorded in 2024 and 2025, acting Interior Ministry Secretary General Miroslav Rashkov said at a news briefing at the Council of Ministers on Wednesday.

Rashkov emphasized that one of his ministry's priorities is the fight against road traffic traumatism and limiting its casualties. The Interior Ministry has undertaken several measures to limit the number of fatalities, Rashkov said. He explained that forces of the Criminal Police, Security Police, the Gendarmerie and Border Police will now support Traffic Police officers in establishing violations, sanctioning drivers who violate traffic laws and drive aggressively. The Interior Ministry will make no compromises in the fight against traffic violations, Rashkov said.

Chief Commissioner Zahari Vaskov, Director of the General Directorate National Police, said that a meeting will be held at the Directorate’s headquarters on Friday with all the heads of regional directorates of the Interior Ministry. The topic of the discussion is road traffic traumatism and road safety. “We will also identify additional measures,” Vaskov added.

He informed that, in 2024, the lowest number of casualties, the lowest number of injuries, and the lowest number of serious road accidents were registered. Since the beginning of 2025, year-on-year, the serious road accidents are down by 245, and the injured – down by 309. The number of fatalities is currently slightly higher in 2025, Vaskov said.

Regarding administrative and punitive sanctions, an increase in issued traffic fines, tickets and violations was reported. Almost 228,000 more have been issued in 2025, almost 46,000 more have been served, and 58,406 more have been paid, Vaskov said. According to him, in addition to Traffic Police, all other bodies of the Interior Ministry, as well as other institutions outside the ministry, are involved in the fight against road traffic traumatism.

Vaskov also said that a specialized police operation focused on trucks, will be carried out in early June with the participation of the Interior Ministry, the Road Infrastructure Agency and the Executive Agency Automobile Administration. If trucks with foreign registration plates violating traffic laws are detected, they will be promptly fined and asked to pay on the spot. Vaskov said that the time and place of the police operation will not be revealed right now.
