Commenting the situation in the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), GERB leader Boyko Borissov said here in Parliament that he is no magician and can’t tell what will happen.
On Tuesday, MRF – New Beginning said in a press release that Dzhevdet Chakarov had resigned as chair of the MRF party following a meeting with MRF-New Beginning Floor Leader and MRF leader Delyan Peevski. Chakarov also announced he is leaving Democracy for Rights and Freedoms’ (DRF) Parliamentary Group. DRF then responded with a post on Facebook, saying that isn’t any and there cannot be any unification (with the MRF).
A single MP cannot be of much influence, said Borissov, answering a question whether he expects the processes happening within the MRF to influence the ration of forces in the ruling majority. “I don’t watch Turkish soap operas,” Borissov further noted.
The GERB leader also commented Delyan Peevski’s proposal to deprive political, parties whose leaders have been charged with crimes, of the State subsidy. “There are thousands of pointless proposals that cannot happen. There is no majority (in Parliament) for them to happen,” Borissov commented.
"Populism is reaching dangerous levels after yesterday’s (Tuesday) news that a case has been initiated in the Constitutional Court," said GERB leader Boyko Borissov in response to the Court's decision to open proceedings based on the President’s request. The case concerns Parliament’s refusal—through its Chair and legal expert Nataliya Kiselova—to consider the President’s proposal for a referendum on adopting the euro.
Borissov recalled that the legislation for introducing the euro was promulgated in 2024 by a presidential decree. "In other words—the date, the exchange rate, everything has been signed by him," he added.
Addressing public concerns about potential price increases due to the euro’s adoption, Borissov said he does not expect this to happen, as the resistance capacity of the people and institutions is strong enough to prevent such a development.
When asked if an awareness campaign in support of the euro is needed before June 4, Borisov responded: "Let’s have a report—what are we supposed to explain before June 4?," referring to the expected convergence reports from the European Commission and the European Central Bank, about Bulgaria’s readiness to adopt the single currency.
Borissov also stressed the importance of discussing major issues like the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. According to Borissov, there needs to be a public discussion about how the European Union will respond and how Bulgaria can handle the consequences.
