Scooters should be equated with mopeds and motorcycles, because of their power of speed, Vazrazhdane MP Kosta Stoyanov said on Monday in Varna.

He specified that the party's proposals have already been submitted to the National Assembly, aiming to change the Road Traffic Act, which is between the first and second readings, because accidents with scooters in the country are increasing.

The proposal of Vazrazhdane is to change the definition of what a motor vehicle is, with scooters being recognized as such as well. This will contribute to them being subject to registration, their drivers not being minors and knowing the traffic rules, Stoyanov pointed out. In addition, drivers will also be subject to alcohol and drug checks.

The proposal also provides for the middle class of scooters, which have a maximum speed of 25 kilometres per hour, to be equated with mopeds, while powerful electric vehicles that lift over 45 kilometres per hour should be in the category of motorcycles, with their drivers having to get a category A license.

If these regulations become a fact, the tension on city streets will decrease, and the police will be able to easily catch and fine violators driving scooters, Stoyanov added.

His position was also supported by Evgeni Balev, chairman of a cycling club in Varna. He emphasized that then drivers of electric vehicles will also be required to have personal protective equipment and noted that the number of these vehicles in Varna is equal to that of bicycles and is greater than that of motorcycles.
