Customs officials at Kapitan Andreevo border control check point seized 4.593 kg of smuggled gold items worth nearly BGN 751,000 concealed on the bodies of two van drivers travelling from Bulgaria to Turkiye on Monday morning, the Customs Agency reported on Wednesday.
The vehicle was carrying the driver, a second driver and seven other passengers from Ukraine via Bulgaria to Turkey. At the border control check point, they all declared that they were not carrying goods to be declared. A thorough customs check established that one of the drivers had a concealed package with jewellery and 13 gold bars weighing at 3.6808 kg with a total value of BGN 650,423. The other driver was found with a concealed package weighing 0.9122 kg estimated to be worth BGN 100,481.
Pre-trial proceedings have been opened.
