Ex-prime minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha visited the Apostolic Nunciature to express his condolences on the death of Pope Francis, his press office said.
He was welcomed by the papal nuncio in Sofia, Monsignor Luciano Suriani.
"An irreparable loss! His pledge to care for the marginalized and to have peace on earth is also our task," Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha wrote in the book of condolences.
Speaking to journalists, he said he knew the Pope from his two meetings with him during his visit to Bulgaria in 2019.
Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha attended the meeting of the Holy Synod with the delegation led by Pope Francis in the Synodal Palace, and then together with his wife went to the Vatican embassy to say goodbye to him.
Saxe-Coburg-Gotha said that although today was a sad day, he would remember Pope Francis for his incredible sense of humour and his natural demeanour.
