Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mariya Gabriel is on an official visit to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Saturday.

The purpose of the visit is to identify new opportunities to deepen bilateral cooperation based on common interests and values. The last visit by a Bulgarian foreign minister was in 2018.

Gabriel will be received in audience by King Abdullah II of Jordan.

The visit will also include a visit to the King Hussein Business Park - an innovation complex for local, regional, international companies and start-ups, featuring a state-of-the-art data network, communications, and infrastructure

Jordan is an important partner for Bulgaria in the Middle East region. October 9, 2024 marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The focus is on security and defence cooperation on countering terrorism and radicalisation.

In this context, this year Bulgaria is ready to host a summit in the framework of the Aqaba Process. The initiative was launched by King Abdullah II in 2015 and involves a series of international meetings aimed at strengthening cooperation and coordination in the fight against terrorism.

Jordan also ranks among Bulgaria's traditional trading partners in the MENA region with development potential.  Trade, economic and scientific-technical cooperation between the two countries dates back to 1960.

The country is an important partner of the EU and NATO.
