The fight against domestic violence is a top priority, and society expects clear solutions and measures to be put in place to enhance prevention and victim protection, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mariya Gabriel said here on Wednesday. Gabriel was speaking at the inaugural meeting of the National Council for Prevention and Protection from Domestic Violence, which she chairs.

"Anyone can become a victim of violence, regardless of their gender, age, economic status, educational background, or social standing, and that is why targeted action on prevention and protection is needed," she said.

According to the meeting’s agenda, information will be presented on the implementation of the legal requirements of the Protection against Domestic Violence Act and the role of the Council of Ministers in this process. The Council will present and adopt the Coordination Mechanism for Assistance and Support to Victims of Domestic Violence.

The Council will also present information on the activities of a working group on the drafting of proposals for amendments and supplements to the regulations for the implementation of the Protection against Domestic Violence Act. Priority activities for funding projects on prevention and protection from domestic violence will also be discussed and identified, the government press service said.
