“Bow and gratitude to all those human beings who died for our freedom,” There Is Such a People (TISP) leader Slavi Trifonov said in a Facebook post marking Bulgaria’s National Day. He recalled the efforts to liberate the northern city of Pleven during the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878) and the more than 30,000 people who lost their lives.

“I may sound a little overly patriotic, but today even the words I use feel inadequate. That is the truth. I am a free person, a free citizen of a free state, thanks to the self-sacrifice of those people,” Trifonov wrote.

Whatever happens in the present, no one should forget the past, because otherwise “we would be people without roots and without gratitude,” the TISP leader said, calling on Bulgarians to remember.

Bulgaria marks the 148th anniversary of its Liberation today. Events dedicated to the national holiday are being held across the country.
