The Ruse Municipal Council Thursday unanimously adopted a declaration against the construction of an incinerator for hospital waste in the neighboring Romanian city of Giurgiu. The proposal was made by Ruse Municipal Council Chair Hristo Beloev, who recalled that a joint meeting was held in Giurgiu between the Municipal Councils of the two cities on Tuesday, during which the text of the declaration was discussed.
The aim is to express the attitude of the two municipalities regarding the intentions of an investor to build an incinerator on the territory of Giurgiu Municipality, which is in dangerous proximity to populated areas, representing an immediate and potential danger to a healthy and safe environment for the residents of both cities. The declaration also states that the public reactions in Giurgiu and Ruse clearly show strong concern and categorical unwillingness of residents to have such an incinerator located in the immediate vicinity of populated areas.
The municipal councilors called for immediate and full transparency from the investor and all competent state bodies about the potential risks through a full, objective and independent assessment of the impact on the environment and people's health in the two municipalities. They insisted that the competent state institutions should take all necessary legal and factual actions, and uphold the interests of the residents of Ruse and Giurgiu to protect their right to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment.
