“In today’s unstable geopolitical environment, the digital sovereignty of the European Union is essential not only for security but also for ensuring economic and social prosperity.” Minister of E-Governance Valentin Mundrov said at a Summit on European Digital Sovereignty held in Berlin, quoted by his Ministry on Wednesday. According to Mundrov, Europe needs more investment, innovation, and own solutions in order to reduce dependence on foreign technologies, protect European data, and strengthen trust in our digital future.
The meeting in Berlin was attended by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and the European Commission’s Executive Vice President for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, Henna Virkkunen.
Participants agreed that the issues of the future will be decided primarily in the digital sphere, therefore Europe must not lag behind in the processes of global technological leadership, and all this can be achieved only through the consolidated efforts of the Member States.
Mundrov stressed that strengthening Europe’s digital sovereignty requires concrete measures. According to him, artificial intelligence is becoming a cornerstone of digital sovereignty.
He discussed with his colleagues support for a new political approach aimed at enhancing Europe’s strategic autonomy in the digital sphere.
On Tuesday, Mundrov also met in Berlin with Annette Kroeber-Riel, Google’s Vice President for Government Affairs and Public Policy for Europe. They discussed possibilities for building a Google data center in Bulgaria, as well as investments in digital transformation, cloud technologies, and artificial intelligence.
