Officers from the General Directorate Border Police discovered seven illegal migrants at the Kulata border crossing, the Ministry of Interior reported on Tuesday. The migrants were hidden in a metal container in a truck travelling to Greece.
Senior Commissioner Petar Dzhigov, the Deputy Director of the General Directorate Border Police, told a press conference that police stopped several trucks for inspection at around 11 a.m. One of the truck drivers appeared nervous, which prompted a thorough inspection. During the inspection, seven people were found in the luggage compartments on the side of the vehicle. They claimed to be Chinese citizens. Their nationality and point of entry are to be confirmed during the ongoing investigation. Dzhigov added that the truck, which was registered in Bulgaria and driven by a Bulgarian citizen, was travelling from Sofia to Thessaloniki in Greece. The migrants are in good condition.
Prosecutor Elitsa Kalpachka reported that police proceedings have been initiated, which can result in imprisonment of 5 to 10 years and a fine of BGN 5,000 to BGN 20,000. The driver who transported the migrants is not the owner of the vehicle. At this stage, there is evidence that he received EUR 700 to transport the seven migrants.
