Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov officially inaugurated on Saturday the renovated section of the E-79 road between Belo Pole and Simitli, Southwestern Bulgaria, marking the completion of a project that had been pending for more than 25 years.
Speaking before representatives of national and local authorities, clergy, and citizens, Zhelyazkov said that “it is encouraging that this project is a result of preventive maintenance rather than emergency repair.”
He added that the new lighting along the route is just the visible part of the investment, “it changes the overall look and brings a sense of order, of what is expected from modern transport infrastructure: safety, functionality, and confidence that the country is moving forward for the benefit of its citizens,” Zhelyazkov said.
He underlined that the success of the project was due to the joint efforts of local and central government representatives. The regularly elected government, which “can make concrete decisions and implement them, all entirely in the public interest.”
Blagoevgrad Regional Governor Georgi Dinev also spoke at the ceremony, noting the symbolic significance of the Day of National Awakeners. “Today, as we honour those who have illuminated the path of our nation, through knowledge and spirit over the centuries, we are opening a road that will quite literally be brighter, safer, and more secure for everyone who travels on it daily,” Dinev said. He pointed out that the project was the result of the coordinated efforts of many institutions, solving a longstanding issue with Blagoevgrad’s ring road. “Today we prove that when the state, institutions, and local communities work together in one direction, results follow,” he added.
The Belo Pole – Blagoevgrad – Simitli section, including the old Zheleznitsa tunnel, has been upgraded under a preventive maintenance contract funded by the Road Infrastructure Agency at a total cost of over BGN 35.6 million.
The opening ceremony was attended by MPs, mayors from the Blagoevgrad region, MEP Andrey Novakov, representatives of the Road Infrastructure Agency, and other officials.
Zhelyazkov, together with the regional governor and MPs from the region, symbolically switched on the new road lighting, marking the official opening of the renovated section.
