During a visit to Silistra, on the Danube, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadjov said that a third bridge over the Danube in Silistra needs to be built. The Minister explained that two more bridges are needed.

He pointed out that this bridge is a necessary crossing point to serve the International North–South Transport Corridor which continues through Romania to Moldova and Ukraine. This corridor is a priority for the European Union.

He expressed his willingness to hold talks with his Romanian counterpart and at the European Commission level to allow the construction of two more bridges by the Romanian state. “This is not a question of funding or willingness. We will provide both. The problem is that Romania is unwilling, and this is hindering the development of these Danube regions in Bulgaria,” Karadjhov pointed out.

“If this does not change at EC level and mechanisms are not found to stimulate the construction of the fourth bridge here Silistra, I don't see much point in continuing to talk about South-North corridors and giant plans to support the restoration of Ukraine. I think this will become a cornerstone for me as a minister, in terms of bridges, and our Bulgaria-Romania transition in general,” Karadjov added.
