Romanian President Nicusor Dan is expected to appoint National Liberal Party (PNL) leader Ilie Bolojan as the country’s next prime minister, according to reports published by Digi24 and Adevarul on Tuesday, citing political sources within pro-European party leadership on Tuesday. The appointment is expected to be announced on Wednesday.
Dan and Bolojan reportedly spoke by phone on Sunday, as negotiations to form a new government are in their final phase.
The upcoming cabinet will be formed through a coalition between the PNL, the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the Save Romania Union (USR), and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR). PSD has made its participation contingent on leading the government in 2027 and securing control over seven key ministries, including Transport and Justice.
The Ministry of Justice plays a crucial role in reviewing all legislation adopted by the government, which could serve as a mechanism for PSD to exert oversight over Prime Minister-designate Bolojan, Adevarul notes.
Only five days remain until the term of interim Prime Minister Catalin Predoiu expires. Political leaders are under pressure to finalize the new cabinet swiftly so that the new administration can present several unpopular reforms to EU officials in Brussels by the June 30 deadline.
