Romania's presidential candidate George Simion from the nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) has met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome, Simion said on his official Facebook profile. He published a photo with Meloni and commented: "We have friends, we have allies, but most importantly, we have God!".
Simion, the front-runner in the first round of elections on May 4, also posted a TikTok video, in which he tells Meloni in English: "Somebody in the Romanian media was saying that we are not on the Euro agenda; we the Romanians, we Conservatives." He was reacting to journalist Cosmin Prelipceanu's comment on Digi24 TV that Meloni does not have Simion on her agenda.
"This is 9 o'clock in my agenda, today, on Wednesday, and I'm with you," Meloni says. "See you soon," she says with a smile.
Meanwhile, Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, one of the eurosceptic leaders in Italy's ruling coalition, wrote on X on Wednesday evening that he supports the AUR candidate in Sunday's run-off election. In doing so, Salvini joined other European right-wing and far-right leaders who have already expressed support for Simion, including Marine Le Pen, leader of France's far-right National Rally party.
