The EU's future must be much different than its past so far, Atlantic Club in Bulgaria President Solomon Passy said at the opening of the EU Meets the Balkans forum, which is taking place in Sofia on Thursday.

The event is organized by the European Liberal Forum, the ALDE Party, and the Atlantic Club of Bulgaria. Among the speakers are Vice President Iliana Iotova, EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos, MEP Ilhan Kyuchyuk, Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev, representatives from Turkiye, Romania, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, and Montenegro. Bulgarian MPs and policy experts are also present.

Passy emphasized that more strategic decisions should be discussed at a forum like this, such as whether Canada and Norway can join the EU, whether the UK will return to the EU and whether Iceland will continue the discussion on EU membership, as well as whether Switzerland will join the EU or first join NATO and when Austria will join NATO.

He recalled that 34 years ago on today’s Holy Thursday, the Great National Assembly gave birth to the Atlantic Club in Bulgaria, as it was the first to start the discussion on the expansion of NATO and the EU to the east. Passy also presented a T-shirt, which was sent by the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and reads "Bring kids back. They must come home", as part of a campaign to return Ukrainian children in Russia back to Ukraine. He invited everyone speaking at the podium at today's forum to take a picture with the T-shirt in support of the campaign.
