Danube Bridge near Ruse will be closed to traffic from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on March 12 due to emergency repairs to the road surface, the Road Infrastructure Agency said on Tuesday. The work will be carried out on the lane of the bridge that has not undergone major repairs.
The 1,057-metre long Bulgarian section of Danube Bridge has been undergoing major repairs in stages since June 10, 2024. Work is currently underway on the final, 320-metre section of the lane from Romania to Bulgaria. Due to heavy traffic, the old and unrepaired pavement has been compromised and work is now being undertaken to ensure traffic safety. This is expected to be the last emergency repair on the route, with the lane in the direction of Bulgaria scheduled to be completed in the first week of April and all traffic to be diverted to the new lane, the Agency said.
During the restriction period on Thursday, drivers can use the first-class road I-1 Sofia - Vidin and Danube Bridge 2 as an alternative route to cross into Romania. Another possible detour route is via the I-7 Silistra-Shumen road, from the junction with the Hemus Motorway to the Silistra border crossing point. Truck drivers will also be able to use parking lots and rest areas in the regions of Ruse, Veliko Tarnovo, Yambol, and Haskovo.
