Ahead of Bulgaria’s adoption of the euro on January 1, 2026, the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) updated its Coin Programme for 2026 and the Preliminary Programme for 2027-2028, the bank’s press service said on Tuesday.

From the beginning of 2026, BNB will issue collector euro coins, which until the end of 2025 are released as commemorative coins. Under EU law, collector euro coins are legal tender only in the issuing country, with face values in euro that differ from those of circulation coins.

With Bulgaria’s accession to the euro area, the BNB will stop issuing Bulgarian coins in levs made of precious metals and copper, marking the completion of existing series and collections.

The 2026 programme will introduce new technical specifications, including face values in euro, while maintaining continuity with established Bulgarian themes, symbols and characteristics.
