Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev took part in the regular monthly meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union, which was held on Tuesday in Brussels, the Ministry's press service reported. The forum agenda included the Russian aggression against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, the situation in Georgia, the future of the Pact for the Mediterranean, as well as the EU's relations with Latin America and with partner countries.
The meeting started with Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha, who briefed his European counterparts on the latest developments in the country and the current diplomatic efforts.
Georgiev stressed the need to continue the sanctions regime against Russia and maintain comprehensive support for Ukraine. He also stressed the strategic importance of initiatives to strengthen security in the Black Sea region, in which Bulgaria plays an active role.
The Council discussed the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East, including the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. The agenda covered Article 2 of the Association Agreement with Israel and the possibilities for a ceasefire. Georgiev said: "In view of the critical humanitarian situation in Gaza, we consider it imperative to open all control check points to ensure humanitarian access for the civilian population. We welcome the agreements on this issue between the EU and Israel." He emphasized the need for the full and unconditional release of all Israeli hostages as a key condition for achieving a lasting end to the conflict. Georgiev also expressed Bulgaria's full support for the activities of the International Atomic Energy Agency in relation to Iran's compliance with its nuclear commitments following the latest escalation of tensions in the region.
The ministers discussed possible EU action in relation to the rapid deterioration of the democratic and human rights environment in Georgia, including the introduction of restrictive measures against persons responsible for human rights violations. The Foreign Minister of Bulgaria stressed the need to sanction those who violate civil and political rights in Georgia.
