site.btaOne Killed, Five Seriously Injured after Vehicle Carrying Illegal Migrants Crashes near Seaside Village of Krapets

A man was killed and five others were seriously injured in a road accident on Monday involving a vehicle which was transporting illegal migrants on the northern stretch of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, not far from the border with Romania.

Reporting the news to journalists, the Head of the Border Police Department in Kavarna, Chief Inspector Galin Petkov, said that a team of the Road Infrastructure Agency had reported that the driver of a vehicle refused to pull over after they motioned him to do so. Later, the vehicle was detected by a Border Police unit, although the driver was trying to keep it out of view behind a large truck. The police went after the fugitives and used light and sound signals to make them stop. The vehicle sped up and raced rather recklessly. At a junction near the village of Krapets, it took a turn, picked up speed, and crashed, Petkov said.

One of the people in the vehicle, a Syrian national, was apparently trying to smuggle five others, who are from Egypt. Those injured were taken to the hospital in Dobrich.
