GERB leader Boyko Borissov assured the president of PACE that Bulgaria will continue to play a stabilizing role in the Balkans. "I assured Theodoros Roussopoulos that in terms of regional stability Bulgaria will continue to play a stabilizing role in the region," GERB leader Boyko Borissov wrote in a Facebook post after a meeting with the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

Borissov added that he had told Roussopoulos that Bulgarians are the target of "an aggressive campaign in the Council of Europe by the Republic of North Macedonia ." According to the GERB leader, our country would not want PACE to become a platform for anti-Bulgarian campaign and unfair accusations. Borissov said that Bulgaria hopes to get support in the Council of Europe for the protection of the rights of the Bulgarian community in North Macedonia.

“We rely on the future development of the Council of Europe and in particular PACE as a key forum for dialogue not only between European countries but also between European nations,” the post said.

Borissov adds that Bulgaria supports Ukraine, which has become a victim of Russian aggression, as well as Georgia and Moldova. Bulgaria has already expressed its readiness to participate in the reconstruction of Ukraine after the war and in the initiatives of the Council of Europe in this direction, he recalls. And he assures that our country will continue to actively cooperate with the Council of Europe to achieve the organization's goals of turning Europe into a zone of democracy, respect for human rights and the rule of law.

"Over the past four years, Bulgaria has gone through a political crisis linked to frequent changes of governments and a number of early elections. Today we have a stable government, established on the basis of a coalition, which is pro-European and pro-Atlantic - we already have the first results related to the full European integration of the country. We are also grateful for the assessment that PACE gave for the elections held in recent years as well organized and free", Borissov further stated during his talks with Theodoros Roussopoulos. He noted that Bulgaria has joined the Schengen area, as well as the positive reports from the European Commission and the European Central Bank on the country’s readiness to join the euro area. “This shows that the compromises we made to create a stable government made sense and were for the good of the Bulgarian citizens,” Borissov is convinced.
