A Romanian national has been detained and charged with attempted theft of a large sum of money, the Sofia District Prosecution Office said on Friday. The woman, H. L., tried to steal EUR 400,000 from T. S. at a bureau de change in Sofia's Iliyantsi borough on April 22, the prosecution service specified.

In a special manner, the defendant, by sleight of hand and skill, exchanged a pre-prepared package containing sheets of paper with a package containing the aforementioned sum. The act remained unfinished for reasons beyond the control of the offender.

Pre-trial proceedings are under way in the case for an offence under the Penal Code punishable by imprisonment.

H.L. has no residence address on the territory of Bulgaria. Given the possibility of absconding, she has been detained for up to 72 hours. A request is to be submitted to the Sofia District Court to remand her in custody.
