Bulgarian chess players recorded a win and a draw in the first games of the second round of the World Cup in Baku.

In the ladies' chess the success was recorded by the number 29 Nurgyul Salimova. With the white pieces, the 20-year-old Salimova outplayed Poland's Olivia Kiolbasa, number 36 in the starting list. The Bulgarian thus needs a draw in the second game to qualify for the third round of the Ladies World Cup.

In the men's event, Ivan Cheparinov by the number 51 drew the black pieces with Germany's Frederik Zwane, number 78 in the starting list. The draw gives a good starting position to the grandmaster from Asenovgrad (South Bulgaria), who will have the advantage of white in the second game with Zwane.

In one of the most awaited games of Wednesday, the leader in the men's world ranking Magnus Carlsen from Norway defeated the Georgian Levan Pantsulaia with the black pieces.

The Men's World Cup features 206 chess players from around the world who will share a prize pool of USD 1,834,000. In the women's event, there are 103 participants who will share USD 676,250.
