Kirill Petrenko, chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, will conduct the Sofia Philharmonic on Thursday night, the organizers said. The programme will include Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar and Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Richard Strauss.
Petrenko will conduct the Sofia Philharmonic at the invitation of Nayden Todorov, the chief conductor of the orchestra.
Petrenko is one of the three most influential contemporary conductors. Born in 1972 in Omsk to a family of musicians, he began his career as a pianist. after moving to Austria, he earned a degree in conducting from the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. His early engagements at the Vienna Volksoper, the Meiningen Court Theatre, and the Komische Oper Berlin established him as a conductor with a rare sense of form. Music director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich between 2013 and 2020. Elected chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic in 2015.
Petrenko rarely accepts engagements with other orchestras, which is why his visit to Sofia is an event of great cultural significance – a gesture toward the Bulgarian music community and the public, said the Sofia Philharmonic.
