site.btaEurozone Central Banks Will Exchange Bulgarian Lev for Euro from January 1 to March 2, 2026
The national central banks of the 20 euro area member states will exchange Bulgarian lev banknotes into euros at the official exchange rate from January 1, 2026, to March 2, 2026, according to the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB). This is related to Bulgaria’s accession to the eurozone at the beginning of next year.
During this period, the other national central banks of the euro area will carry out free-of-charge exchanges of lev banknotes into euros at the fixed exchange rate of EUR 1 for BGN 1.95583.
The banks will apply a daily exchange limit of BGN 2,000 per client/transaction per day.
The exchange service will be provided at designated locations within each national central bank of the euro area. No fees, commissions, or other charges will be applied.
Bulgarians will be able to exchange leva into euros at commercial banks and branches of Bulgarian Posts until the end of 2026, with the service being provided free of charge until mid-year. The Bulgarian National Bank will exchange leva into euros free of charge for an unlimited period.
