Speaking during Question Time in Parliament on Friday, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov said that there will be no water rationing in Pleven in the summer of 2026. He was responding to a question put by Petar Petrov MP of Vazrazhdane, who referred to a report from the National Water Board submitted to the National Assembly and showing that the board - which includes seven ministers - had held a meeting in November. Petrov asked what measures will be taken to address Bulgaria’s water crisis and ensure affordable water prices for all citizens.
"I am confident that what we have stated - that Pleven will not face water rationing in in the summer of 2026 - will be fulfilled. We have said this categorically," the Prime Minister noted. He added that this commitment applies to all other areas where water issues have not been addressed for decades and no targeted investment has been made.
Zhelyazkov recalled that the National Water Board had been created by a decision of the National Assembly in response to the crisis and water rationing in Pleven. The board’s meetings have addressed all sensitive points and settlements affected by water losses, the poor condition of water and sewer infrastructure, and the plans of water supply and sewerage operators. The board's tasks have been expanded to include long-standing issues that have lacked coordinated regulation, such as the maintenance and cleaning of riverbeds, he said.
The Prime Minister note that since the board was established, the activities aimed to reduce water losses caused by inefficient municipal infrastructure have been directed to the respective water and sewerage companies, the Bulgarian Water and Sewerage Holding EAD, Irrigation Systems, and other institutions.
