All democracies are responsible for each other, said Solomon Passy, President of the Atlantic Club of Bulgaria, on Thursday at an international conference titled Strategic Resilience, dedicated to security, disinformation, and strengthening resilience in supply chains in Taiwan–EU relations. The event was organized by the Atlantic Club in partnership with the Taipei Representative Office in Greece and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
According to Passy, Bulgaria is responsible for Taiwan, the European Union is responsible for Taiwan, and vice versa - Taiwan is responsible for other democracies worldwide. He described this principle as an analogue of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which states that an attack against one member is an attack against all.
“At today's conference, we are going to discuss resilience and disinformation. More precisely, we would like very much to draw conclusions from what happened during the war against Ukraine. When there is a conflict between one democratic country and one dictatorial country, our instincts are telling us to support democracy. That's why I, personally, do not think very much when I hear about conflict between North Korea and South Korea. My instincts are telling me to take the side of South Korea. It is the same when I hear about Taiwan and their big neighbor. And it is the same when I hear about Iran and Israel,” Passy said.
He added that it would be a good idea for NATO and the United States to reach an agreement allowing NATO to partially replace some of the American troops stationed in Korea and Japan. “This would be very important for peace in the Pacific and globally,” he noted.
Passy also quoted U.S. President Donald Trump, who reportedly said that China will not take military action against Taiwan while he is in office, as Chinese leaders know the consequences.
