site.btaOver 60 Kilograms of Cannabis Seized at Gyueshevo Border Checkpoint

Customs officers from the Department for Combating Drug Trafficking seized more than 60 kilograms of cannabis during an inspection at the Gyueshevo checkpoint on the border with North Macedonia on Saturday, the Customs Agency said on Monday. 

Using risk analysis methods, customs officers selected for a thorough inspection a cargo vehicle with Albanian registration plates arriving from North Macedonia. During the search, officers discovered six bags containing a green grassy substance hidden in a specially constructed compartment inside the tractor cabin.

A field test confirmed that the substance was cannabis. The seized drug weighed a total of 60.920 kilograms and was valued at nearly EUR 500,000.

Following the discovery, the driver of the vehicle, an Albanian citizen, attempted to flee but was apprehended outside the checkpoint by border police officers.

The investigation is ongoing under the supervision of the Kyustendil District Prosecutor's Office. Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated in the case.
