Turkiye's Foreign Ministry expressed hope that after the elections held in Armenia on Sunday, Armenia will take bolder steps to normalize relations in the region, according to a position published on the Ministry's website on Monday.

According to preliminary results, the Civil Contract party won the parliamentary elections in Armenia. The Civil Contract party is led by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who is considered a pro-Western politician who played an active role in normalizing relations between his country and Turkiye.

Turkiye's official position reads: "In the post-election period, we hope that Armenia will take bolder steps towards peace and normalization in the region. Turkiye will continue to contribute to regional stability and prosperity, as it has done to date, based on the common interests of the countries of the region "

The Foreign Ministry also expressed its satisfaction with the way the parliamentary elections were conducted, describing them as peaceful and calm.

Turkiye and Armenia have had no diplomatic relations, and their land border has remained closed since 1993. In 2021, the two countries appointed special envoys to work to normalize contacts. In June 2025, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Istanbul, where the two discussed the possibilities of normalizing relations.

In September 2025, officials from Turkiye and Armenia met at the border between the two countries and expressed readiness to open the border crossings and implement the agreement on their restoration, signed on July 1, 2022. At the end of December, a simplification of visa procedures was agreed upon, and in March 2026, flights from Istanbul to Yerevan were officially resumed. In early May, Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz became the first official Turkish representative to visit Armenia in 18 years. He was in Yerevan for the eighth summit of the European Political Community.
