Traffic on the Danube Bridge connecting the cities of Ruse and Giurgiu in Bulgaria and Romania will be temporarily suspended on Thursday due to major repair works, the Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) reported on Monday. The reason is major repair works on the Romanian side of the final 320 metres of the facility. Passenger vehicle crossings will be restricted on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., while heavy freight vehicles will face a longer closure until 9:00 a.m. on Friday.

The RIA specified that after concrete is poured to connect the joints between the repaired sections, traffic must be halted for at least 12 hours to allow the material to set properly and ensure a strong bond between the bridge panels.

The bridge has already been fully closed twice for similar operations on other sections since repair works began on July 10, 2024, the Agency said. The overall completion of the repair works is expected next month.

During the closure, heavy freight vehicles will be able to wait in designated parking and rest areas in the regions of Ruse, Veliko Tarnovo, Yambol, and Haskovo.
