site.btaBulgarian Schools Play Key Role in Preserving Botev March Tradition, Says Education Minister
The role of Bulgarian schools in organizing the Botev March is very important, said Education and Science Minister Georgi Valchev Monday in Vratsa. He attended a presentation of a special printed BTA issue featuring news and photos from the commemorative event over the years. The edition marks the 80th anniversary of the National Tourist March "In the Footsteps of Botev's Rebel Detachment".
Valchev said the march is a strong example of how education can involve society, bringing together families, communities, and schools. He noted that Bulgarian revolutionary, writer, and historian Zahari Stoyanov helped establish the tradition through early commemorations of Hristo Botev, and that the initiative has grown thanks to many supporters over time. He also pointed out that after Bulgaria’s Liberation there were attempts to politicize Botev’s legacy.
The tradition preserves Botev’s legacy and helps young people connect, build friendships, and take part in a meaningful national experience, Valchev emphasized, adding that the ministry will continue supporting the initiative together with local authorities along the route.
He praised the Bulgarian News Agency for its archival work and coverage of the march, calling it invaluable national heritage.
