Maria Vutova has won the award for best Spanish translation for 2025 for her work on the novel “Death and the Gardener,” author Georgi Gospodinov said on Facebook.
“I am happy also because her first translation into Spanish was “The Physics of Sorrow”. And her translation of “Death and the Gardener” won the 2025 Book of the Year Award,” Gospodinov added.
“This is truly a great recognition and opens new doors for Bulgarian authors in a language where, fifteen or twenty years ago, there was perhaps only one translator into Spanish, who had uttered the bitter phrase that there are many ways to die of hunger, the surest being to be a translator from Bulgarian. That is no longer the case,” the author added.
Last week, the Spanish publication ABC described Georgi Gospodinov as “one of the greatest European authors in recent years.”
Georgi Gospodinov is a poet, short story writer, playwright, video installation artist, essayist, and screenwriter. Since his prose debut in 1999 with “Natural Novel” to his most recent book, a beautiful, elegiac, and moving account describing the final months of his father’s life, “Death and the Gardener”, he has built a remarkable body of work, ABC writes.
