Bulgarian director Javor Gardev will present The Bacchae by Euripides on July 10 and 11 at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus in Greece, the organizers of the Athens Epidaurus Festival said on Wednesday.
The show is a co-production of the festival, the Ivan Vazov National Theatre in Sofia and the National Theatre of Northern Greece.
Bulgarian actor Leonid Yovchev will play the role of Dionysus. The production features Bulgarian and Greek actors, while the music will be performed live by the British band The Tiger Lillies, the organizers said.
The Bacchae is the last surviving tragedy by Euripides and tells the story of the return of the god Dionysus to Thebes and his conflict with King Pentheus.
The Athens Epidaurus Festival is a cultural forum in Greece which annually features theatre, music and dance productions staged in the capital Athens and Epidaurus.
