A new group of logisticians arrived at the Bulgarian Antarctic Base on Livingston Island on January 8. They travelled by plane from Punta Arenas, Chile, to King George Island, and on the final leg of the journey were met and taken aboard the Bulgarian naval research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421), this country's Antarctic Institute reports on its official Facebook page.

At the base, the scientists were warmly welcomed and immediately joined the implementation of scientific programmes and the provision of logistical support during the expedition, the post adds. It includes photos showing the newly arrived scientists being greeted by their colleagues in the traditional Bulgarian way, with bread and salt.

The first group of scientists and logisticians departed from the Bulgarian base on Livingston Island on January 4.

Following the reopening of the Bulgarian Antarctic Base in mid-November, the main work of the 34th Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition began. In the area of South Bay on Livingston Island, the international team of scientists, with the support of the expedition’s logistical team, is collecting samples for several research projects.

NIK 421 sailed for the icy continent on November 7 from the Black Sea port of Varna. The vessel arrived at the Argentine military base in Mar del Plata on December 13 after a month-long voyage across the Atlantic Ocean.
