Moldova's ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) held a march on Friday under the slogan "What are you doing on Sunday?" aimed at mobilizing voters ahead of the September 28 parliamentary elections.
Carrying banners reading "I vote for peace", "Freedom – now or never" and "Their weapon is money, our weapon is the vote", hundreds of PAS members and supporters walked along Chisinau's central Stefan cel Mare Boulevard, home to the country's main state institutions.
Chanting "EU, Peace, Development", "We Want Europe, We Want Peace, Not War" and "With PAS to Europe", demonstrators sought to counter accusations from the pro-Russian opposition that the party is pushing Moldova towards war.
The march ended in front of parliament, where PAS leader Igor Grosu thanked participants and urged citizens to vote. Prime Minister Dorin Recean also joined the rally.
The pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity backs closer integration with the West, including EU membership by 2030. PAS has accused Russia of attempting to influence Moldova's political process through hybrid attacks, disinformation, party financing and vote buying.
The opposition Patriotic Bloc, an alliance of four pro-Russian parties, advocates restoring economic ties with the Commonwealth of Independent States and is open to cooperation with BRICS, the Eurasian Economic Union, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and China. Earlier this week, former President Igor Dodon, one of the bloc's leaders, accused President Maia Sandu, who founded PAS, and her allies of steering the country towards war.
Friday marks the final day of campaigning. Saturday is a day of reflection, when political campaigning is banned.
On Sunday, Moldovans will vote for the country's 101-seat parliament. Fifteen parties, three coalitions and four independent candidates are competing in the race. One party, the National Unity Bloc, withdrew in favour of the ruling PAS.
