A repatriation flight operated by Hungarian airline Wizz Air landed at Terminal 1 of Vasil Levski Sofia Airport, the carrier said on Tuesday.

The flight arrived from Muscat, Oman, carrying Wizz Air crew members of various nationalities who had been stranded in the Middle East due to the escalating conflict and airspace restrictions.

Wizz Air said the repatriation flight from the United Arab Emirates via Muscat to Sofia was arranged to assist colleagues who were in the region and unable to return due to the rapidly evolving situation and airspace restrictions.

The airline added that, from the outset, it had been assessing whether similar flights could also be offered to passengers and that it continued to explore all viable options while remaining in close coordination with the relevant authorities in multiple countries.

Airspace in parts of the region remains severely restricted. The company said that factors such as operational clearances, route limitations and security considerations were often beyond the airline’s direct control, and that each additional flight required extensive coordination and government approvals.

Wizz Air said it remained fully committed to carrying passengers to their original final destinations as soon as it was safe and operationally possible, and that it would not compromise the safety and security of its passengers, crew or fleet under any circumstances.

The Hungarian airline has cancelled flights to Saudi Arabia, Israel, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Amman until March 7 due to the security situation. Earlier on Tuesday, the carrier said it was adjusting its operations because of airspace restrictions imposed following the escalation in the Middle East. To support passengers affected by disruptions to travel to and from Israel, Wizz Air plans to increase flights to Sharm el-Sheikh from several European bases from March 6, subject to regulatory approval.
