A ceremonial military tattoo on National Assembly Square in Sofia marked the 148th anniversary of Bulgaria’s Liberation from Ottoman rule on Tuesday.

Vice President Iliana Iotova reviewed Bulgarian Army representative units at a ceremony led by Brigadier General Stoyan Shopov, chief of staff of the Bulgarian Land Forces.

The ranks included revered battle flags, symbols of the Bulgarian armed forces’ highest traditions and virtues, recalling the Army’s heroic feats: the Samara Flag; the standard of the 1st Cavalry Regiment; and the flags of the 15th Lom, 13th Rila, 25th Dragoman, 30th Sheinovo, 6th Tarnovo, and 24th Black Sea infantry regiments.

At the close of the ceremony, participants knelt in tribute to those who died for Bulgaria’s freedom, and the national anthem was played.

Wreaths and flowers were laid on behalf of Vice President Iliana Iotova, National Assembly Speaker Raya Nazaryan, caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov, Bulgarian Patriarch Daniil, Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev, the Constitutional Court, caretaker Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov, caretaker Deputy Prime Minister for European Funds Maria Nedina, Chief of Defence Admiral Emil Eftimov, National Assembly deputy speakers, parliamentary groups, Ombudsman Velislava Delcheva, ministries, Sofia Municipal Council Chair Tsvetomir Petrov, municipal council groups, and the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA).

Attendees included Iotova, Nazaryan, Gurov, Daniil, Terziev, Constitutional Court President Pavlina Panova, caretaker ministers, MPs, representatives of religious communities, diplomats, military personnel, members of the judiciary, BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, and members of the public.

Bulgaria’s National Day was marked across the country and at venues around the world.

Later, Iotova will host the traditional March 3 reception.
